Fire!!Fire!!Fire!!...SOS...
The piercing sound of the buzzer reverberated in the air “Run!!!Run!!!!Run!!! There’s s fire in the office” yelled the fire marshal. Everybody scampered towards the nearest fire exit. There was total pandemonium and chaos. Only thing, all this was planned. Yes you have got it right; we had a mock fire drill in our office.
I understand mock drills are essential, so that we know what is to be done when there’s a fire in real. But announcing the date and time of a mock drill makes no sense to me. One, fire doesn’t make an announcement and two nobody takes it seriously. 3:30 pm was the time for the drill.
Some observations I made
1) “Let’s take the lift...we shall reach down early”
2) “We will go down at 3:15pm to avoid the crowd”
3) People were casually chatting, laughing and moving downstairs
4) Some guys were found with coffee cups in their hands
5) Others left for their home
When the drill was over everybody settled came up and settled down on their seats. After a few minutes there was another fire alarm. Now what? Is there a real fire? What to do now? Should be run down again? Everybody got tensed a started looking around for answers. Then came an announcement “Don’t panic...This was just a false alarm” Reminded me of an Aesop fable The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
Wish there was something like a "Mock Life". Where everyone knew well in advance whats in store for him/her.It would have made life so much more easier.
Life teaches us lessons until we learn them.
